Big Deal Casino Academy in NoMad Is First of Its Kind
NoMad is now home to Big Deal Casino Academy, the state’s first and only licensed gaming school.
The school is designed for students across all levels, including those looking to train as professional dealers, new players who want to learn the basics of games like craps, poker, blackjack and roulette and the advanced gambler looking for inside tips on how to outsmart the competition. The school will also be renting out its game tables for private parties and events.
No money actually changes hands during classes, because gambling is still illegal in New York City. Instead, Big Deal Casino Academy is a training ground for players trying to take on the house in the new casinos upstate and in New Jersey. Dealers certified through the school will be eligible to work nationwide.
Big Deal Casino Academy is a novel addition to the city, but it feels at home in NoMad. It fits in with the neighborhood’s cultural intersection of business and nightlife, while recalling NoMad’s past as a hub for illicit gambling rackets during the “Satan’s Circus” era. The school is another example of the unusual, one-of-a-kind businesses that NoMad attracts.
Big Deal Casino Academy is located on the 6th floor of 1 East 28th Street, near 5th Avenue. Exact prices have not yet been listed publicly, but DNA Info is reporting that classes run the range of several hundred dollars.
