NoMad Heroes: Shake Shack Helping to Say Thank You to Frontline Workers

New Yorkers and New York restaurants are giving support and saying thank you in every way they know how – from daily 7:00 p.m. clapping and cheering to delivering meals to those fighting the pandemic. Shake Shack has played a leading role and supporting role in various efforts of support and thanks across New York City. Here are a few of those stories.

As the COVID-19 crisis was hitting New York, Stacy Rotner, a corporate responsibility director at a law firm with offices in New York City, wanted to do more than sit and wait. So, she started the nonprofit GratiFoodNYC from her sofa. Within the first few weeks, she raised thousands of dollars to help send free meals to workers on the frontlines. Since then, Rotner has worked with Shake Shack and other caterers to have meals prepared and delivered to hospital workers – seventy meals three times a week.

In addition to working with GratiFoodNYC, Shake Shack itself has distributed over 4,500 meals to more than 65 hospitals, firehouses, shelters, and food banks, helping workers on the frontlines, as well as those who are food insecure and in need of assistance.

On a very personal level, a Shake Shack employee said thank you to the hospital staff at Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island by delivering free lunches. After having recovered from COVID-19, Edwina Caine brought Shake Shack burgers, sandwiches, and treats to thank hospital workers who helped to save her life. Read the full story from ABC here.
