Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria: Jonathan Benno’s Second Act at The Evelyn Now Underway
Back in June, famed New York chef Jonathan Benno launched the Leonelli Taverna, an Italian trattoria, as part of the introduction of the new The Evelyn Hotel on East 27th Street in NoMad. Now several weeks in, the second phase of Benno’s master plan is in full swing with the opening of Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria, a pastry and focaccia concept drawing influence from both the traditional bakeries of Rome and the Italian-American pastry shops of New York.
While the Taverna offers evening casual upscale dining, the Focacceria occupies the market/café space with breakfast, lunch and dinner menu choices. Starting at 7:00 a.m., guests can enjoy Greek yogurt with berries or granola, Italian-style egg dishes or bombaloni, an Italian donut with filling, along with a house blend of La Colombe coffee or other coffee/tea beverages. At 11:00 a.m., the focaccia comes out for lunch and dinner, traditionally sold by the slice, half or whole sheet. Guests can choose from several Benno recipes, including Sicilian-style, Pizza Bianca and Buffalo Mozzerella, among others. The menu also includes a variety of Italian-style sandwiches and salads.
And then there are the pastries and cookies. (This is a bakery and pastry shop, after all.) Cannoli, cornetto (Italian croissants), coffee crumb cake, cheesecake, biscotti and a variety of tempting cookies and confections are all available, all day, for anyone who needs to satisfy their sweet tooth.
Now open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily, the new Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria is certain to be a hit among NoMad workers and residents—not to mention the hotel guests. And Mr. Benno isn’t quite finished unveiling his concepts: Watch for his fine dining establishment, “Benno” opening at The Evelyn this fall.
