New York Daily News Highlights Affordable Takeout Options Near Madison Square Park

From Eleven Madison Park to Black Barn, NoMad’s upscale dining scene often receives global attention. But, our neighborhood’s casual dining and takeout options are also some of the best in the city. We were thrilled to see the New York Daily News recently take notice and publish a feature highlighting some of the overlooked casual gems in our area.

With a goal of highlighting great lunches for under $10, the Daily News was smart to pick out New York Bakery, Latin American Restaurant and Chadni Restaurant. These three restaurants are not only delicious but affordable, and demonstrate the diversity of small business owners in our neighborhood.

As we highlighted earlier this year, New York Bakery’s owner, Jwa Hoon Kim (aka Harrison), is a Korean immigrant who devised a hybrid Korean-Mexican affordable offering. The Daily News raves that Kim “collaborates with his mainly Mexican kitchen staff to make quesadillas, tostadas, tacos and specials like pork in a fiercely spicy salsa de arbol, made with the skinny red chilies of the same name, served with rice, beans, salad, tortillas and a small tub of thick salsa verde made of puréed avocados and green chilies.”

The article also features another restaurant with delicious food and a simple name. Latin American Restaurant is owned by Leocadia Milanes who, “for the past 25 years… has fed hungry Manhattanites the homestyle Dominican recipes she learned from her mother, opening her first diner on 17th St. before moving nine blocks north to start Latin American Restaurant in 2000.”

Finally, if you’re looking for a delicious takeout/delivery option, Chandni Restaurant’s “lengthy menu features curries, stews and other snacks from Pakistan and Southern Asia.” With homemade naan, lamb curry or vegetarian bhindi masala for under $8, chef Mohammad Nagi’s Chandni is a must try.
