Where to Take Your Dog in NoMad
New Yorkers love their dogs. Despite being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, it is estimated that NYC is home to more than 500,000 dogs. Even so, finding dog-friendly places here can be a challenge if you don’t know where to look. Fortunately, the NoMad neighborhood offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy outings with Fido. Let’s look at just a few dog-friendly hotspots in NoMad.
Restaurants with Outdoor Seating
Despite the fact that many restaurateurs love to accommodate dogs, NYC health codes forbid dogs inside restaurants unless they are registered service pets. However, leashed dogs are allowed within outdoor seating at a restaurant’s discretion. In most cases, neighborhood restaurants that have outdoor seating are more than happy to accommodate furry friends, and many will even offer treats and water bowls for them. (If you don’t know the pet policy of a particular NoMad restaurant, call ahead to find out for sure.)
Shake Shack
Speaking of dog-friendly restaurants, Shake Shack is known around NYC as one of the friendliest—especially the one in Madison Square Park. Not only is there plenty of outdoor seating available, but their menu includes a “Bag-o’-Bones” (specialty dog biscuits made by Bocce’s Bakery) and a “Pooch-ini”—a dog-friendly vanilla custard made with dog biscuits and peanut butter.
Bonus Pick: Ilili’s BOX
If you’re around Madison Square Park with your pup but don’t want a burger, check out Ilili’s BOX as an alternate. Located just west of Madison Square Park, on the central islands between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, BOX offers delectable Mediterranean-style take-out food, and the outdoor seating on the island is perfect for you and your dog to enjoy lunch.
Madison Square Park
When you’re done lunching at Shake Shack, you and your dog can enjoy hours of fun in the park itself. Dogs are allowed on-leash almost anywhere in the park, and while some NYC parks have “off-leash” hours in designated areas, Madison Square Park does one better with a dedicated dog park where your dog can run, play and socialize with other doggy friends and their owners.
For even more dog-friendly fun, keep an eye open for the annual Mad Sq. Barkfest, which takes place each July on the Southern Gravel. This afternoon-long festival features all sorts of fun treats and activities for your dog and you to enjoy together, courtesy of local vendors, including including Biscuits & Bath, New York Dog Nanny, and Andrea Arden Dog Training.
