Weekend in NoMad: Oscars Parties and More
After last weekend’s Valentine’s Day-induced stress, this is a good weekend for taking it a little easier. The theme of the weekend is “Arts and Culture,” in the form of an exhibition at Ace Hotel, a concert at Jazz Standard, and Oscars viewing parties at Cafe El Presidente, The John Dory and the Gansevoort Park Rooftop.
Ace Hotel: Doing Something Big When No One Asks You To Do Something Big
Part architecture, part science, the Ace Hotel’s month-long collaboration with +POOL is on the cutting edge of green design. +POOL is a initiative to create the world’s first self-filtering, floating swimming pool in the East River. The pool, which began as a wildly popular Kickstarter project, filters the river water in which it floats into clean, swimmable water. The Ace Hotel exhibition, Doing Something Big…, features floor-length drawings that chronicle the evolution of the pool’s design and renderings of what +POOL’s will look like when completed.
Doing Something Big… is free attend and open 24 hours a day.
Jazz Standard: Tierney Sutton Band
Vocalist Tierney Sutton brings her band to Jazz Standard. The singer’s latest album, Paris Sessions, received a 2015 Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The album’s nomination was Sutton’s fifth consecutive Grammy nomination and features some of jazz’s best instrumentalists: Al Jarreau, Peter Erskine and The Turtle Island Quartet, among others. Sutton will perform work from her acclaimed album, joined by her band, featuring Christian Jacob, Ray Brinker and Kevin Axt.
Sets are at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Friday and Saturday performances and $30 on Sunday. Tickets are available online or at the door.
The John Dory: Old Hollywood Oscars Party
If you want to watch the Oscars in real style, The John Dory is the place to be. The oyster bar is throwing an “Old Hollywood NY” themed viewing party. Starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, you can watch the awards while you order from the delectable raw bar, much on bar snacks and sip on special cocktails, created just for the occasion. And bottles of cava are only $75.
The John Dory is located at 1196 Broadway, at the Ace Hotel. To make a reservation, you can call (212) 792-9000 or email reservations@thejohndory.com.
Cafe El Presidente: Los Oscars Party 2015
Just because the stars are dolled up doesn’t mean that you necessarily have to be. Starting at 7 p.m., Cafe El Presidente will host a taco-fueled Oscars party. Dine on the restaurant’s delicious menu of tacos, snacks and champagne-based cocktails as you watch all of the red carpet moments and tearful acceptance speeches.
Cafe El Presidente is located at 30 West 24th Street. For reservations, call (212) 242-3491.
Gansevoort Park Rooftop: Rooftop Oscars Viewing Party
Winning the Oscar gives you a great excuse to look down on others. You can literally look down on people as well when you’re hanging out in the rooftop penthouse at Gansevoort Park Hotel. Relax on the couches as you sip on movie-inspired cocktails and snack on popcorn. You can even take pictures in the Bosco interactive GIF photobooth, making it a night you’ll definitely remember.
The event starts at 6 p.m. It is free, but you need to RSVP online.
