Weekend in NoMad: Newport Jazz Now 60 and Bound by Chance

The Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 is playing the Jazz Standard this week in the NoMad District

NoMad in March is going strong with two unique events this weekend: the Newport Jazz Festival Now 60 at the Jazz Standard and Bound by Chance at the Ace Hotel!

Catch the final two nights residency of the Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 at the Jazz Standard. Jazz fans know about the legacy of the historic Newport Jazz Festival. This year, the festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary by putting together an ensemble of world-class players to perform highlight numbers from the festival’s long and varied past. From Louis Armstrong to Duke Ellington or Miles Davis to contemporary acts, the band will give its take on the festival classics.

The band features Anat Cohen on clarinet and soprano sax, Karrin Allyson on vocals, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Mark Whitfield on guitar, Peter Martin on piano, Ben Allison on bass, and Clarence Penn on drums. The all-star ensemble will perform sets at 7:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost $35 a person and can be purchased here.

Avid readers are sure to appreciate Bound By Chance. Held in the Ace Hotel Lobby Bar, Bound by Chance offers each guest an individual piece of literature assembled from parts of 16 seemingly separate stories. Upon entering the event, guests are asked to roll a die eight times to determine the selection and order of the stories used in creating the guest’s own custom novella. Once your book is assembled, grab a cup of joe at one of NoMad’s great coffee shops and then sit back and enjoy the read. The event is free to attend and starts at 3 p.m.

Have a great weekend!
