The People’s Improv Theater—The PIT

The People’s Improv Theater, also known as The PIT, is a comedy center dedicated to the instruction, performance, and development of original comedy.

Originally founded in 2002 by comedian Ali Farahnakian in a small black box theater, the center has grown into a school, which has  many electives and a writing program; a theater that presents original comedic shows seven nights a week; and a corporate and educational workshop program, which offers team building, leadership, and business training.

The PIT puts on a variety of different comedy shows including improv, sketch, stand-up, and theater.  There are multiple shows per night appealing to a broad range of tastes and interests.  These are listed on its website calendar. Every Wednesday is known as “Super Free Wednesday” and all of the comedy shows are free.  The PIT also has a lively bar scene before shows with a young hip crowd.

Some of the big-name comedians that have graduated from The PIT include Ellie Kemper from The Office, voice actress Kristen Schaal who is well-known for her role on Bob’s Burgers, and comedian and actor Hannibal Buress. The PIT has opened a second location: The PIT Loft at 154 West 29th Street.  The schedule for performances at this location can be found on the main website calendar.
