New Do, New You
Summer is right around the corner, and you’re in desperate need of a fresh cut. There are weddings and graduations and dates and galas and all sorts of fancy events where you’ll need to look sharp.
It’s time to call the professionals, and why not take a trip back in time while you’re at it? So take a stroll down the most au courant neighborhood in Manhattan to a proper barbershop for a most proper experience.
Rudy’s Barbershop
14 West 29th Street (Between Fifth Avenue and Broadway)
Named after a character from Fat Albert, Rudy’s is a countrywide shop with locations spanning from Seattle to Los Angeles, Tennessee to Georgia, and it’s only home in New York City: NoMad. Rudy’s took the erstwhile basement on 29th Street and transformed it into a beautiful space full of salvaged industrial parts. Patina vintage tiles and an original door from a Remington ammunitions factory, light fixtures and shelving from a Brooklyn lab, and a 150-bulb blinking arrow retrieved from upstate New York all give the shop a lived-in feel that’s both functional and inviting. Whether you’re looking for a high-and-tight or hot shave, Rudy’s has it all. They even launched their own line of products so you can take the experience home with you.
Made Man Barbershop
10 East 23rd Street (And Broadway)
170 West 23rd Street (and Seventh Avenue) Just a hair outside NoMad.
Founder Sam Chulpayev has barbering in his blood going back 100 years. So it made sense that he started cutting hair 20 years ago. Fast-forward to 2013 and he finally opened his first brick-and-mortar shop. When you sit in his barber’s chair from 1901, gaze over to the 1880’s brass cash register and soap machine from the ‘30s, you’ll be transported to another time altogether and emerge with a brand new look.
Truman’s Gentlemen’s Groomers
121 Madison Avenue (Between 30th and 31st)
More of gentlemen’s club than a snapshot of the past, Truman’s is a beautifully designed lounge in NoMad where men can go to relax, watch whatever’s on the flat screens, have a drink, and get a fresh cut. The upscale parlor goes even further than a red-carpet haircut and doubles as a day spa offering facials, deep tissue massages, and even waxing. And if you’re in it for the long-term, annual memberships are available to stay well kempt year round.
Pop by any of these great locations and see what all the buzz is about.
