Mark Turner Quartet at Jazz Standard
Saxophonist Mark Turner leads his quartet through four nights at the Jazz Standard this weekend.
Turner has toured and performed with a range of influential acts, from the SFJazz Collective to Billy Hart, Gilad Hekselman and chamber trio FLY. Turner’s quartet includes Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Joe Martin on bass, and Justin Brown on drums (Jonathan Blake will take over Brown’s role for the final Sunday evening shows).
The New York Times calls Turner “one of the most productive and vital artists of the last dozen years.” When commenting on his current piano-less quartet, Turner said “It’s more of a challenge… when you’re writing for horns without a chordal instrument, because you have to specify what notes the horns and bass are going to play to form the harmony. But I like a challenge.”
The Mark Turner Quartet will perform sets at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, with an additional 11:30 p.m. set on Friday and Saturday evenings. Tickets to shows on Thursday and Sunday cost $25 and Friday and Saturday evening shows are going for $30. Tickets are available online or at the door.
