Weekend in NoMad 1/11/13: Lonnie Smith at Jazz Standard, DJs at Ace Hotel
There are a lot of awesome cultural events going on in NoMad NY this weekend ranging from some of the best live jazz in NYC to the hippest musicians DJing. There are also tons of great restaurants to eat at before you go out.
If you don’t already know, NoMad has become a cultural hub for live jazz in NYC. The addition of the soon to open Jazz Gallery in the neighborhood adds to the already vibrant musical landscape. The Jazz Standard has a living legend performing on their stage both nights this weekend. Dr. Lonnie Smith (who celebrated his 70th birthday at a show at Jazz Standard last year) will perform both nights. Tonight, he will play with his trio and tomorrow with an octet. Known for his work on the Hammond B-3 organ, Dr. Smith has been featured in over 70 albums. Head over to the Jazz Standard website to buy tickets.
As usual the Ace Hotel has some of the coolest musicians in town hitting the decks to DJ in their Lobby Bar. One of the hottest new bands in the country, Sinkane, returns this Friday to continue their DJ residency. This Ahmed Gallab led group, who we profiled last week, has been making waves internationally and we always have an awesome time at their DJ sets. Tomorrow night, Michael Cavadias will DJ a set of pop, Motown and alternative.
Some of the best live jazz in NYC and awesome DJ sets! This is shaping up to be a great weekend in NoMad NY!
