Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer & Dafnis Prieto at The Jazz Gallery
Popular NoMad-based music venue The Jazz Gallery will present a special night of music this Wednesday evening. Saxophonist Henry Threadgill, pianist Vijay Iyer and drummer Dafnis Prieto will perform during the evening of cocktails and music.
As a founding member of the trio Air, and a frequent collaborator of Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill is commonly thought of as one of his generation’s leading free-form improvisors. His own compositions has earned him a place in jazz history and a reputation that is echoed in DJ Studs Terkel having named him one of, “the greatest and most deeply human musical figures of our time”.
Vijay Iyer, on the other hand, is known as a pianist and producer whose music is informed by degrees from Yale in mathematics and physics and his Ph.D. in music cognition from the University of California, Berkeley. Iyer was the subject of an in-depth profile by The New York Times earlier this year and his recent album Mutations (ECM, 2014) has been the focus of critical praise.
Percussionist Dafnis Prieto is the recipient of a 2011 MacArthur Fellowship grant and has played alongside such greats at Steve Coleman, Roy Hargrove and Andrew Hill. He is the founder of the independent record label Dafnison Music and has published five albums as a bandleader.
The Jazz Gallery event, which features three of the most notable jazz musicians alive today, will be held offsite at 830 Broadway. Cocktails starts at 6:30 p.m. with the performance following at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online and cost $500 per person.
