Comedy in the NoMad District

The PIT theater in the NoMad District is a great place to go drinking in New York.

If you ask a New Yorker, they might tell you that NoMad District nightlife is known for being a great place for boutique hotels, awesome restaurants and some of the best spots to go drinking in New York. However, something many people do not realize is that the NoMad District is a hotbed of New York’s legendary improv comedy scene. Some of the best comedy nights in NYC are going on right down the street at the PIT (Peoples Improv Theater).

The PIT opened in 2002 and currently resides 123 East 24th Street near Madison Square Park. Their fantastic building features multiple theatre and performance spaces, as well as a front bar which serves as a clubhouse of sorts to many of New York’s hottest up and coming young comedians. Head there on any night and you can be treated to fantastic improv comedy teams from around the country as well as standup comedy. You might even have a drink next to a future SNL or Daily Show star.

The PIT also offers a variety of classes for every level of comedian. There are courses for hopeful future comedy professionals, master classes, as well as classes targeted to the 50+ age group. They also have intensive writing classes targeting any kind of comedy genre you can think of.

Another comedy option, if you are looking for a great place to go drinking in New York and have a great night, is the Ace Hotel. Comedians Trish Nelson and Beth Hoyt host a comedy and variety show every week in Liberty Hall at Ace. You never know what to expect with this event and you can end up seeing live music, improv comedy and even burlesque. Doors open at 6:30 and there is no cover if you come before 9pm. Their next show is tonight!
