Chaps & Co Chooses NoMad for its First U.S. Shop
Come May or June of this year, NoMad men will have another option for bespoke grooming services. Chaps & Co, a United Arab Emirates barbershop with locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has announced that its first U.S. location will be right here in our neighborhood. Chaps & Co is set to open an 821 square-foot space at 1165 Broadway (between 27th and 28th Street) in a 10-year leasing deal secured by RIPCO.
Chaps & Co is not a typical trip to the barbershop. Instead, it is a place where men are greeted by an extremely well-dressed expert in men’s grooming before receiving traditional services such as a superb classic cut, beard trim, color treatment, and hot towel shave. Chaps also offers nose and ear hair waxing, eyebrow and beard threading, and a blow-dry and scalp treatment, as well as massages and charcoal face masks. With a British gentleman’s club-style approach to grooming, it is the perfect place for men to take relaxation to the next level.
The ambience helps too. While being groomed, men can enjoy a refreshing complimentary beverage (alcoholic or non). All the Chaps & Co. shops are designed by a London-based practice Nicholas Szczepaniak Architects and evoke the sense of a private men’s club. They are spacious and well-lit with mahogany leather styling chairs that achieve the utmost comfort. To create a space that exudes strength, sexiness and intrigue, the architects designed a dark color scheme with smoked oak wood walls, steel panels and raw concrete.
Chaps & Co’s website describes the business as “a barbershop where a man can be a man, sit down, get an ice-cold drink and chat sh*t during a clean haircut and a straight razor shave.” Charlie Mitchell, a freelance journalist who has lived in the Middle East, reviewed his haircut at Chaps & Co as the fanciest haircut of his life. Mitchell stated, “For a trim, it’s cheap, and much value is placed on customer satisfaction.”
The founder, Welshman Jordan Davies, was able to disrupt the men’s grooming market at the perfect time and has done a wonderful job of promoting the Chaps & Co brand throughout the United Arab Emirates. Since the first shop opened in 2015, business has been booming. “The demand was simply mad,” Davies says.
