In NYC where space is always a commodity, an outdoor golf resort is pretty much out of the question, and even mini-golf is a challenge. The answer: Bring it indoors. That’s just what the UK-based “crazy golf” club Swingers plans to do next year when it opens its first U.S. location right here in NoMad—in the basement of the new Virgin Hotel.
According to the Commercial Observer, Swingers (whose full name is Swingers: The Crazy Golf Club) recently signed a 15-year lease for 22,000 square feet of lower-level space in the hotel, which is currently under construction at 1227 Broadway. This NYC location marks the first U.S.-location for the growing Swingers franchise (its other two locations are in London). The hotel marks the first New York hotel for Virgin, and only its second in the U.S.
Crazy golf is basically British for miniature golf (or mini-golf, or putt-putt, depending on where you’re from in America)—and Swingers’s own version of it is inspired by a 1920s golf club in rural England, combined with fun foods and ample quantities of adult libations. One of the brand’s London locations even includes a nightclub with a DJ, although it remains to be revealed whether such a feature is planned for the NoMad location. That said, as you might have figured out by now, this version of mini-golf isn’t for the kids. Swingers is an 18-and-older establishment.
When completed in 2019, the new 39-floor Virgin Hotel will add 465 guest rooms for NYC visitors—and with the addition of Swingers, NoMad visitors and residents alike will have a new place to play. Both the hotel and the golf club will be welcome additions, and both will add to the classy, fun vibe for which our neighborhood is known.
